We welcome Anton!

anton_gardsater-essen

We are expecting to be working in top gear this autumn, so we’ve got some reinforcement in the form of Anton Gårdsäter. Anton has just come from Henrik Nygren Design, where he’s been working for five years with customers like Moderna Museet and Spendrups. He studied at Beckmans College of Design and has done freelance work including designing the Radio P3 Gold Award.

New trademark law in force from 1 July 2011

nota_bene

A new Trademarks Act is now in place. Much of it is new, but the main features are clearly recognizable. The new aspects may however affect your trademark and we would recommend a review of your brand portfolio and the new ground rules.

We would be happy to help if you have questions about trademarks, design, copyright, advertising, the Internet and managing domain names. We also work a great deal with contracts, disputes, and processes in connection with these issues. Feel free to contact one of our legal specialists at legal@essen.se or call +46 8 503 001 00 if you would like to know how the new law will affect your trademark.

Summer and…

sol

Now it’s holiday time again, but we’ve still got lots to do. During the summer we’ll be getting to grips with some new assignments for – without naming any names – an optician chain, a management consultant, a pension insurance company and a training company. Apart from this, it’s still full speed ahead for our Swedbank, LKAB and SATS teams during the summer.

If we don’t see each other or hear from each other anyway, we’d like to wish everyone a very good summer!

Trademark cooperation unlimited

hm_lanvin

Co-branding is difficult, but it can have a positive effect if it is done in the right way, with both parties coming out as big winners. Margareta van den Bosch, who is on our Board, had a discussion with us this morning on the experiences of H&M’s designer collaborations.

H&M very successfully teamed up with great individualists like Karl Lagerfeld and Rei Kawakubo and prestigious fashion houses such as Lanvin. We talked about the challenges that arise when established pairs of opposites such as premium/budget, cred/range and vision/reality always have to be balanced against each other. We were also reminded of the importance of uncompromising quality running through the whole collaboration process. When you get down to it, the material on the hangers is just as an important a link in the experience chain as the choice of designer.

Next time we connect two brands to each other, we’ll do it with ambitions that are at least as high as this!

A new assignment for old languages

minoritet

In Sweden we have five national minorities: Jews, Roma, Sami (who are also an indigenous people), Sweden Finns and Torne Valley Finns. Their language and culture is part of Swedish society and our common cultural inheritance – something that must be protected.

To strengthen the rights of the minorities, a new law was passed on 1 January 2010, something that places demands on for example municipalities and county councils in their daily activities.

As part of this we are now helping the Stockholm County Administrative Board to create a handbook to help the various administrative authorities in their work.

Hello to Elin and Carolin!

Elin & Carolin

We’re continuing to grow this week, too. Carolin is taking over our senior designer role. Carolin has just completed a multi-year project with H&M where she had overall responsibility for their new graphic identity. Before that, she also managed to work for Stockholm Design Lab for 7 years and study at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Elin is our new junior designer. Elin graduated from Berghs in 2009 and has been concentrating since then on a freelance basis on packaging design and company identities.

Make yourselves at home!
